Homemade Chunky Apple Sauce
Serves 415 mins prep5 mins cook
This chunky apple sauce is sweetened with brown sugar and flavored with cinnamon, cardamom and vanilla. It's my own recipe with roots in Germany (called Apfelmus there), and I love serving it with my Kartoffelpuffer (German potato pancakes), Quark pancakes, Kaiserschmarrn, Ghackets mit Hörnli (a Swiss noodle dish).

What you need

tbsp fresh lemon juice

tbsp brown sugar

cinnamon stick

tsp ground cardamom

pinch salt

tsp vanilla extract

fl oz water
Instructions
5 Peel, core and chop apples into medium sized pieces. Immeditely toss in the lemon juice. 6 Combine with water, spices, salt and brown sugar in a medium sized pot and bring to a boil. 10 Once boiling, stir, cover with a lid, and cook on medium for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. 7 Remove from heat and puree to your liking. I use my favorite ever immersion blender and I like some chunks, so only pureed about half of my apples. 8 Add vanilla and stir. 9 Serve warm or cold. Some of my favorite German recipes using apple sauce are my Kartoffelpuffer (German potato pancakes) and quark pancakes.View original recipe
